Where are area codes used?
Area codes are an integral part of the North American Numbering Plan (NANP). They are used in the United States, Canada, and several Caribbean nations to route telephone calls efficiently across vast geographic distances.
Format of a Telephone Number: (NPA) NXX-XXXX
The NPA is the Area Code, identifying a specific geographic region. The NXX is the Central Office Code or prefix, narrowing down the location to a specific exchange. Finally, the XXXX is the unique subscriber line number.
Assignment of Phone Numbers
When the NANP was created in 1947, originally there were only 86 area codes allocated. Today, due to population growth and the massive adoption of mobile phones, there are over 400 active area codes. New area codes are assigned via "overlays" (adding a new code to an existing region) or "splits" (dividing a region).
